My Report On Jean Batten By Asmah

Jean Gardner Batten.
by Asmah

Introduction
1.Jean Batten was a famous New Zealand aviator. She wanted to prove that men and women are equal. Jean Batten broke many world records.

2. Jean Batten was born on 15th September 1909 in Rotorua. Jean had two brothers, that were older than her. Jean`s father`s job was being a dentist and her mother`s job was being an actress.

3. When Jean was four her family moved to Auckland, and soon her father left to go to France to take part in the first World War. Jean went to a primary school just before going to boarding school. Jean enjoyed many sports, including swimming, tennis and netball. Jean was a fantastic pianist but from an early age Jean developed a passion to be a pilot.

4. In 1928 Jean sold her piano and travelled to England to learn how to fly. But unfortunately her father wanted her to be a pianist. Jean joined the London Aero club at Stag Lane aerodrome and began to take lessons. On the day of her first solo flight, she shared  the sky with the huge R101 airship which crashed only a few days later.

5. In 1930 Jean gained her pilot licence and returned to New Zealand hoping to raise money for her solo flights. At the beginning of 1931, Jean returned to England to complete her pilot's licence. It included learning about navigation, engine maintenance and studying weather conditions, all of which was to be valuable during her solo flights. She had a great deal of trouble raising money for her flight to Australia.

6. In 1933 Jean Batten got a second hand Gypsy Moth aeroplane. Jean set off for Australia in April and after battling her way through sandstorms in the Syrian desert she eventually got as far as India before the disaster struck. A piece of machinery in her engine broke and she had to crash land. Jean was not hurt but the plane was badly damaged, and she had to return to England.

7. Then Jean flew back to New Zealand and she received some bad news that the man she was planning to marry was missing. Jean join the hunt and went to Australia with the searchers. Jean was heartbroken that her fiance was killed.

8. On the 22nd of November 1982, Jean Batten died by being bitten by a bulldog. Many people forgot about Jean Batten and Jean`s family found out that she died five years later.
